Celebrating Disability Pride Month

Jun 30, 2023

July is Disability Pride Month, a time to celebrate the diversity within the disabled community and an opportunity to honor the history, achievements, experiences, and struggles of the disabled community. People with disabilities make up the largest minority group in the world, 15% of the world's population, according to the United Nations and World Health Organization.

Disability pride is notably celebrated in July to commemorate the passing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in July of 1990, landmark legislation that broke down barriers to inclusion in society. But barriers still exist, which is why we need to honor every kind of disability, the people who identify with them, and the wide range of supports they need to thrive. Here’s more about the history of Disability Pride Month and the story behind the flag.

Let's work together to create a world where everyone can reach their full potential, regardless of ability. Learn more about BHN's Developmental & Intellectual Disability Services, supporting individuals with developmental needs and helping them to thrive in our communities.

We recently spoke with Tiffany Rufino, the Youth Mental Health Coalition Manager at the Public Health Institute of Western Mass, and a member of BHN’s Board of Directors to gain insights on addressing mental health topics. “Throughout my life, I’ve always worked in community and youth development,” Tiffany says. “I didn’t have a huge background in public health, but I did have experience working and developing youth programs and in high schools with youth in Springfield.”
