Insurance, Payment & Financial Assistance

Behavioral Health Network (BHN) is committed to making behavioral health, substance use treatment, developmental services, and community-based supports accessible to the communities we serve.

BHN participates with a broad range of private insurance plans, in addition to Medicaid (MassHealth) and Medicare. Because coverage varies by insurance company, type of plan, and service, our staff can help verify your benefits and explain your coverage before services begin whenever possible.

Please note that verification of benefits is not always a guarantee of payment by the insurance company. Final coverage and payment are determined by your insurance plan based on your eligibility, benefits, medical necessity, and other plan requirements. If you are covered by more than one insurance plan, BHN will coordinate your benefits in accordance with applicable payer requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Our Commitment to Access

As part of our mission, BHN strives to serve community members regardless of socioeconomic status. We work with individuals and families to identify insurance coverage, public benefits, financial assistance programs, and affordable payment options whenever possible.

  • For Those Who Have Insurance

BHN will submit claims to your insurance company for covered services. Members should be prepared to present their current insurance or MassHealth identification card and a picture ID at each visit.

Depending on your health plan, you may be responsible for:

    • Copayments
    • Coinsurance
    • Deductibles
    • Services not covered by your insurance plan

After your insurance has processed your claim, you will receive a statement for any remaining patient responsibility. Clients are responsible for balances not covered by insurance or other funding sources. Patients are responsible for notifying BHN of changes to insurance coverage and providing current insurance information.

  • For Self-Pay Services

If you do not have insurance coverage or choose to receive services on a self-pay basis, BHN offers self-pay options for many services.

Self-pay fees are established in accordance with applicable regulatory requirements and organizational policies and are generally aligned with recognized reimbursement methodologies.

Unless other arrangements have been made, payment is typically expected at the time services are provided.

  • Sliding Fee Scale & Financial Assistance

BHN offers a Sliding Fee Scale Program to help make services more affordable for individuals and families who are uninsured, underinsured, or experiencing financial hardship.

    You may qualify if you:

    • Are uninsured or underinsured
    • Are experiencing financial hardship
    • Are receiving services that are eligible for the Sliding Fee Scale Program
  • How the Process for Sliding Scale Reductions Works
    1. Speak with your BHN provider or Intake staff about your financial concerns.
    2. Meet with a designated staff member to discuss available options.
    3. We will review your household size, income, insurance status, and available coverage options.
    4. If you qualify, you may be approved for a reduced self-pay fee based on program guidelines.
    5. If your financial circumstances change during treatment, you may request a new financial assistance review at any time.
  • Payment Plans

If you have an outstanding balance, BHN may be able to establish an interest free payment plan. Our Billing Department can discuss available payment options, answer billing questions, and help determine whether you may qualify for financial assistance. You may call a billing representative at (413)-223-5831, option #2.

  • Good Faith Estimates for Uninsured or Self-Pay Patients

If you do not have health insurance or are not using your insurance to pay for services, you have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate of the expected charges for your care before services are provided, as required by the federal No Surprises Act.

You may request a Good Faith Estimate at any time before scheduling a service or during the course of your treatment. If you receive a bill that is substantially higher than your Good Faith Estimate, you may have the right to dispute the charges.

For more information or to request a Good Faith Estimate, please contact BHN's Intake or Billing Department at (413)-223-5831, option #2.
