Deaf Awareness Month: Access, Understanding, and Connection Matter

September 20, 2026

Whether you're seeking support for your mental health, recovery, or overall well-being, you deserve to feel understood, respected, and included. During Deaf Awareness Month, we recognize the experiences, contributions, and culture of Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals while highlighting the importance of accessible care and communication.

For Laura Peters, Recovery Coach Supervisor and Service Coordinator for BHN's Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services, accessibility goes far beyond accommodations. As she explains, "Accessibility is not just about providing an accommodation; it is about creating an environment where Deaf and Hard of Hearing people can fully participate, grow, and thrive."

That perspective is at the heart of meaningful access. It's not simply about removing barriers. It's about creating opportunities for connection, participation, and support so people can engage fully in their care and their communities.

Meaningful access also starts with recognizing that everyone communicates differently. As Jenny Leca, Outpatient Clinician at BHN, explains, "Accessibility is not one-size-fits-all. While interpreters are important, true accessibility also includes clear communication, respect for ASL and Deaf culture, accessible technology, and creating environments where people feel included, understood, and respected."

We understand that accessibility looks different for everyone. That's why we work with each person to understand their communication preferences and provide supports that help them fully participate in care.

Deaf Awareness Month is a reminder that access and inclusion benefit everyone. When barriers are removed and communication needs are respected, people are better able to connect with care, build community, and get the support they need in ways that work for them.
